What is Atma


  • Ø ATMA is cultural education envisioned by our beloved Amma to promote the overall personality development of the students through a structured theory & practical programme.
    Ø Moulding students, to make them competent enough to survive and excel in all walks of life, ATMA blossoms as a ten-petelled lotus.
    Ø The essence of ATMA is the refinement of joy to bliss, knowledge to wisdom & freedom to liberation.
    Ø The Dynamic Equilibrium Theory (Shiva-Shakti) is the balance methodology adopted by ATMA in blending together the curricular and co-curricular activities.
    In addition to the regular ongoing programmes, an array of annual programmes is also actively pursued.

    Description of the ten petals:

    1. ATMA Social Service (Arpana Thyaga Manobhava at Amrita)
    Focuses on instilling into each student, the importance of social commitment in health care & daily life. Service to fellow beings with commitment & sacrifice refines the personality. Many activities like drug bank, eye donation (Nayanamritam), ABCD forum (blood donation – Amrita Blood Collector & Donor forum), Palliative care volunteer training (Amrita Santhwanam), Medical camps & disaster relief camps (Earth Quake, Flood, Tsunami etc) are being organized by the students including the Bihar relief work.

    2. ATMA Arts Club (Artistic Talents Manifesting at Amrita)
    Aims at sharpening up the artistic skills of the students. Youth festivals, Cultural Lecture Demonstrations etc are conducted on a regular basis. Every year, we call celebrities from outside to perform some cultural and arts events for our students. SPICMACAY, superstars of Amrita TV, Singers like Sri. Biju Narayan, Sri. Rahul Raj, cine artists Ms. Navya Nair, Ms. bahvana, Sri. Suresh Gopi,and various others have entertained our students .

    ATMA Arts club organized six Arts Festivals. The latest being Srishti in 2007 & ongoing Phoenix in 2008.
    “Amrita Samvad” debate club conduct debates for the campus. In addition, the debate club conducted two all Kerala inter medicos debate competitions in our campus.
    Our students participated in various inter collegiate meet in all over India like AIIMS, CMC, JIPMER, CET and REC in Kerala and with private financing medical colleges in Kerala.
    Also magazine club releases annual magazine “Srishti” and news letter”.

    3. ATMA Cultural Education (Atma Tatwa Mahavidya at Amrita)
    Regular classes on cultural education & Value based education are happening regularly.
    Eminent speakers from inside and outside give classes on this. People like Sri. Venugopal C Govind gave a talk on India & Independence.
    An Amrita gold medal exam on Human Values & Amma’s teachings is conducted every year. The winner will get a gold medal; certificate and a cash prize of Rs.5000/-These prizes are given to the students by the chancellor directly.
    Part of cultural education, regular evening prayers are being held in the boys and girls hostel. Photographs of all three major faiths adorn the meditation hall.

    4. ATMA Green Friends (Admiration Towards Mother-earth at Amrita)
    Nature camps, observance of World Environment day, Campus cleaning, sapling distribution etc. are organized by ATMA Green Friends. Every year ATMA Green Friends distributes saplings to the public, this year on 5th June, more than 5000 saplings were distributed. Every new born baby will receive a sapling from our student.

    5. ATMA Yoga Club (Association & Transcendence into Mystic Aum)
    Teaching Integrated Amrita Meditation Technique (IAM Tech) & regular yoga classes practice. Lecture classes on principles of yoga also arranged. All the students in the campus has undergone IAM meditation. Periodic review classes were also being conducted.

    6. ATMA Theatre & Film Club (Appreciation for Theatre & Movie at Amrita)
    The film club screens a movie every fortnightly & students engage in discussion & appreciation of classic movies. The theatre club regularly indulges in making & performing plays, street shows & dramas especially for public health awareness
    (In association With community Medicine Dept). Acting workshops were also conducted and certificates were given. The latest being the screening of the movie “WIT” in association with the Pain and Palliative day on 10th Oct 08.

    7. ATMA Science Club (Advancing Technology & Methodology at Amrita)
    Science club promotes and encourages activities like Student research projects. Every year three or four students gets ICMR scholarship for research. ATMA science wall magazine etc encompassing the latest advances in technology, including Nanomedicalsciences. Students have been taken to places with scientific importance like Pastures Insititute and exhibitions. Eminent scientists like Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam, Sri. CNR Rao, Dr. M.s. Valiayathan, Sri. Swaminathan etc have done their share in motivating our students for these research works..

    8. ATMA Student-Teacher Forum (Adoring Teachers & Masters at Amrita)
    In order to have a best student-teacher relationship: Every year Gurupoornima is observed by ATMA to respect all the teachers & adore all great masters of our Institute. Students offer their humble salutations to their teachers on this day. This year students felicitated Dr. D.M. Vasudevan, Dr. S.K. Ramachandran and Dr. Kanthswamy. Symbolically matrupooja is being done by one of the students.

    9. ATMA Anti Tobacco Programme (Anti-Tobacco Movement at Amrita)
    One of the most important Anti tobacco programmes in South East Asia enlisted by the WHO. We won the international Quit & Win tobacco cessation contest organized by the Finland Institute of Health & the World Health Organization in the year 2006. The prize money of $ 2500 was handed over to one of our patients who stopped using tobacco by Padmashree Kamal Hassan & the Indian cricket star, Mr.Sreeshanth in a grand function organized at AIMS.
    Every year, “World No Tobacco” is celebrated. This year on May 30th, ATMA organized a Colorful campus rally, MD, Principal; many teachers also participated in this along with the students by wearing “NO TOBACCO” slogan T-shirts. In addition to this, ATMA organizes awareness programme to schools, colleges, urban and rural community. Through various indigenous dramas, skit, videos and presentations our students have greatly influenced the mass.

    10. ATMA Sports Council (Athletic Talents Meet at Amrita)

    Annual sports meet & regular games, matches & physical fitness programmes are organized by the students. Till 2008, six Sports Festivals were organized in an elaborate and grand fashion. Before the final sports day, two weeks continuously competitions were held after their regular classes. The champions in all the events were felicitated regularly in the Annual Sports day by chief Guest which have included police Commissioners, Commander in chief of the naval base, Indian football captain Sri. I.M. Vijayan etc..

    A world class gymnasium has been set up for boys and girls separate in their respective hostels.

    Also Short recreational trips/study tours are being arranged:

    First year (1st Sem) : After their 1st sessional exam trip to Water Theme Park
    11nd year (1Vth Sem) : study tour to Bangalore/Ooty
    Vth Sem : Hyderabad/Bombay
    111rd year (VII Sem) : Munnar

    All these activities are arranged by the 3rd year students with the guidance of faculty, senior students and management representatives (appointed from the student welfare committee).

    We also celebrate festivals like Onam, Diwali etc..
